On the Shortness of Life
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC – AD 65)
Translated by John W. Basore

“I often read “On The Shortness of Life,” one of Lucius Seneca’s most famous letters, whenever I succumb to social pressure to treat time as less valuable than income…He soon became my favorite Stoic philosopher, and this will help you understand why…”
-Tim Ferriss, entrepreneur and author of “The 4-Hour Work Week”

“It’s not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.”
-Seneca

Life is short. The tasks and decisions facing us are many. “On the Shortness of Life” aims to provide us with a philosophical system for deciding what is important and how we should spend our most valuable non-renewable resources – time.

Seneca was a Roman philosopher and a foremost contributor to the Stoic school of thought. Although he lived during the first century AD, his teachings remain popular today. Stoicism has particularly been credited for being a practical philosophy, applicable to the everyday life of every man and woman.
