Description:

The Post World War II economic culture has been the most affluent in the whole of human history and yet it now faces a steep decline in 2008. How are we to respond? What is happening? What can we count on? These are the questions that people are facing around the globe in 2008 and beyond. Can we find a place to be content in whatever circumstances we face? I believe this is possible and best for all. The Prayer of Augur can give us a balance perspective.

Money alone does not make us happy. The love of money destroys individuals, and in time an entire economy. The big "G" word is greed. Greed is inherently selfish. Greed needs to be stemmed. The “wanting more” is an internal hunger that need s to be silenced. What can silence such an urge?

The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh--an oracle: This man declared to Ithiel, to Ithiel and to Ucal: "I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know! "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. Proverbs 30: 1-6 (NIV)

"Two things I ask of you, O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the Lord?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. Proverbs 30:7-9 (NIV)

Wisdom is a dynamic perspective of God’s world, as revealing his design, order, and harmony in the cosmos, a response of submission to the wise Designer (Creator), a cultivation of character and thoughtful integration of being (“heart,” “soul”), and a responsible engagement with reality, life, and community that pleases God and people (Proverbs. 3:4). It is also the pursuit of truthfulness as a growth in relationship with God and people (Dr. Van Gemeren).

The prayer of Augur is in the book of Proverbs and is to be understood in the context of the quest for wisdom. The prayer was written thousands of years ago. Yet the needs and the heart of humankind remains the same. This is why the Prayer of Augur is germane today.
