1. Gateless Gate - a fundamental Zen work by the Chinese Zen master Wumen Hui-k'ai (Japanese: Mumon Ekai), published in 1228 and including 48 fundamental Chan(Zen) koans.
2. Confucian Analects a collection of sayings written down by Confucius' students in the period approximately seventy years after his death (ca. 479 BCE - 221 BCE), the representative work of Confucianism which continues to have a tremendous influence on Chinese and East Asian thought and values today.
3. The Tao Teh King or the Tao and Its Characteristics by Lao-Tse, translated by James Legge. Written around the 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, "Old Master") - fundamental to the Taoist school of Chinese philosophy

While not a religious book, it is an exotic and instructive work that, while discussing the Tea Ceremony and its history, gives many insights about 1900's Japan national spirit, philosophy and culture.
