Try out the SFO maps in Gate Maps Lite for free, and if you like it, for about a buck you can probably get your connecting aiport's maps (check for an "*" below to be sure of coverage before purchasing).
Gate Maps Lite has three (O'Hare, JFK, and San Francisco) of the full version's 15 detailed airport maps making it easier to find your gate as you rush through a busy, unfamiliar airport on your way to try to make that connecting flight. [did I mention that coverage is indicated by "*" in the list below?]
It was designed in anticipation that you'll usually refer to a terminal map while in-flight or in an area with limited connectivity, and therefore works in Airplane mode (no network connection needed), on either an iPhone or iPod Touch. Also, given many airport sites use Flash for their maps, accessing such content from your iPhone/iPod Touch is currently not possible. PDF is another popular format, but the download time negates a quick lookup when you're rushing to make that connection!
To use:
After launching, tap the row corresponding to the city of your airport. The first screen you see is the scrollable airport overview map. *Single* tapping one of the terminal areas brings up the more detailed, scrollable view of that area, enabling you to view the layout of the gates. Single tap anywhere on a detail map to return to the overview. Or at any point, from either a detailed view or the overview, you can return to the full list with the "
