Description:The Fairytale World in between the LinesThe picture-story book "Monkey Subdues White-Skeleton Demon" and traditional Chinese paintingJourney to the West in traditional Chinese cultureJourney to the West, written by Wu Cheng-en (c. 1500—c. 1582) in the Ming Dynasty, is the most famous, if not the most influential, fiction in China. Full of romantic imagination, it encapsulates the oriental mysteries and mysticism of traditional Chinese culture. The work of fiction about gods and devils involves concepts inspired by Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. It puts Buddhist and Taoist gods and devils in the same setting, notwithstanding their differing religious practices. The work depicts the complexity of the Chinese pursuits in life in the characters, and the chaos and uncertainty at the convergence of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. This work of fiction is a window to traditional Chinese culture.Journey to the West in Chinese literatureJourney to the West is one of the four ancient classic fictions in the history of Chinese literature, and is often regarded as an unusual work. It is the longest work of fiction about gods and devils, and is a defining work in that genre. The heroes of the book—Monkey, Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy—all have human traits; this, coupled with the richly textured imaginary landscape, contributes to the unique construction ofTraditional Chinese painters use a brush as their means of drawing. The tip of the brush is supple and flexible when it moves, and the line drawn by it is expressive of its rhythmical move, which may be quick and light at one time and slow and heavy at another. The line, therefore, is one of the most important means of expression in traditional Chinese painting. Unlike western paintings where image and colour have equal values, the use of colour in traditional Chinese painting often depends on the change of lines that combines the heavy and the light proportionately. Take the Flying Apsaras in Dunhuang frescoes for example. The colours, though bright and broad, are only decorative, and the animation of the Apsaras is chiefly represented by the rhythmical change of lines. Contained in this picture-story book are several coloured pictures, which demonstrate the pursuit of the use of colours.
