Description:

The Patent Legal Coach iPhone/iPod application is a quick reference for inventors to understand the Patent process, rules, and statutes.

The full patent statute (Title 35 of the United States Code) is provided as a guide to the United States patent system.

An "Inventor Guide" was designed to highlight key aspects that are most important to inventors, such as rules & laws that govern searches, drawings, the application, claims drafting, and infringement.

The United States Code (USC) is supplemented with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), which has specific details that explain statutory provisions. Selected CFR sections are included in the "Inventor Guide" to fully explain the patent process. For example, Title 35 merely states that drawings should be provided when necessary to understand an invention. The CFR describes the content of the drawings, such as how to submit partial views and margin size.

Also included in the "Inventor Guide" are United States Supreme Court cases that outline the law governing patent searches for obviousness, and the CFR provision that explains an inventor's duty to disclose search results that affect patentability.

Detailed information about claims drafting, from the CFR, and specific descriptions about how to write and complete the application for submission to the USPTO are also provided. The three different types of patents (utility, design, and plant) are described along with a breakdown of the USPTO fees and maintenance requirements.

The application was created for users to easily move between different parts using three tabs that saves the last textual display. For instance, the user can open the "Inventor Guide" to read the CFR provision for application format. He/she can then open the "Full Statute" to read the statutory section about patentability requirements for novelty and non-obviousness. The tabs could then be flipped back-and-forth to read both at the same time.

For purposes of a mobile device, the navigation menu titles are abbreviated and paraphrased to fit on the screen. Full titles are listed in the textual display when a item is touched.
