Description:Webtext is an iPhone application that enables you to send short text (SMS) messages over the web directly from your phone.
The application works by sending the message using your phone’s Internet connection, as opposed to its cellular network connection. You choose from a list of supported web text providers, with which Webtext interacts in order to deliver your message to its recipient.
The following “Bulk SMS” providers are officially supported: Clickatell, AQL, ipipi.com, aspsms.com, VoipBuster and CardboardFish.
Why use a web text provider instead of sending the message using the regular cellular connection?
1. Cost. Sending messages over the web usually offers a large discount over the price of sending the message as normal.
2. Necessity. Some mobile operators only offer SMS as an additional service, with extra monthly cost.
3. Convenience. This application works when there is no cellular coverage (over Wi-Fi) and it also works on the iPod Touch!
As a bonus, Webtext also provides some support for sending messages using the “Free Webtext” feature found on the websites of certain mobile operators. This service is generally free but is usually only available to clients of those operators. E.g. O2 Ireland gives its customers 250 free web texts every month. As this interface is proprietary, the functionality of this type of provider is not guaranteed to work 100% of the time.
To get started using this application:
1. Sign up for one of the bulk SMS providers above or choose your local mobile operator if available. Verify/register your mobile number if necessary.
2. Credit your account directly on the SMS provider’s website.
3. Enter your account login details and your (the sender’s) number in Webtext settings.
4. You’re ready to go. Try sending a test message to yourself.
This application is free until February 2009. Download and try it!
