The Dao De Jing is fundamental to the Daoist school of Chinese philosophy and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. This ancient book is also central in Chinese religion, not only for Daoism but Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Dao De Jing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, aided by hundreds of translations into Western languages.

There are over 300 translations of the Dao De Jing which have been published in many different languages. It has been translated more than any other book in the world except for the Bible. Some authors got very creative with their translations, and others seemed to stick closer to previously accepted readings of it.

The great Scottish sinologist James Legge included Dao De Jing in his Sacred Books of China series, published in 1891. This version is my favourite one, I think it is the version most stick closest to the original.
