GasCoder combines the 2009 CPT (The American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology) with the 2009 CROSSWALK (produced by the American Society of Anesthesiologists) into a searchable database on the iPhone or iPod Touch. The GasCoder program starts by having the user enter a medical procedure keyword. The program searches the CPT database for the most likely matches which are displayed. From the presented list, the user selects the desired procedure. The program then provides the user with the correct CPT code, its description, the anesthesia CPT code and its description as well as the base unit vale for the procedure.

Entering a numeric CPT code will also result in the program finding the matching anesthesia CPT code and descriptions. A list of the commonly used abbreviations can be viewed on the information page which is accessed by touching the "i" button in the upper right corner of screen. Touching any of the abbreviations in the list takes you to the list of matches for that abbreviation.

While GasCoder is designed primarily for anesthesia care providers and their support personnel, it should also be useful to other medical practitioners that need to retrieve CPT codes for various procedures, such as surgeons, emergency physicians, radiologists, family physicians, etc.

This program is officially licensed by both the AMA (American Medical Association) and the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists).

Please be aware that when the user initially downloads the GasCoder program from the Apple App store, the program does not contain the CPT and CROSSWALK databases. The first time the program is launched, the user's iPhone or iPod Touch (not just their computer) needs to be connected to the internet (by Wi-Fi or cellular network) to allow the program to download the databases from the secure GasCoder server. This is a free download that usually takes less than 60 seconds.
