About Tap Project

Nearly 900 million people do not have access to clean water, with young children the first to get sick and die from sanitation-related illnesses—including water born diseases and malaria.

Thus, the creation of the Tap Project started in NYC in 2007. Tap Project asked patrons at participating restaurants to give 40 children a tomorrow by giving $1 for the tap water they normally enjoy for free and typically take for granted. Three years later, Tap Project is a worldwide effort. Specifically in the US, Tap Project can be found in 44 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.

The Tap Project is made possible, in part, through the support of Water Geeks, American Express, and Turner Broadcasting. For more information, please visit www.tapproject.org

UNICEF’s Role:

UNICEF works in more than 90 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices. Over the past 15 years, more than a billion people gained access to improved drinking water and sanitation facilities thanks to UNICEF’s efforts. However, every day, 4,200 children die of water-related diseases. UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization, and UNICEF is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal: Reduce the number of preventable deaths to zero.
