HappyNap is a free, lite version of the full HappyWakeUp smart alarm clock, which is based on medical research of the human sleep and its structure. The application is the result of a study conducted in two Finnish universities, Tampere University of Technology and University of Helsinki.

HappyNap gives you a nap of 15 to 30 minutes depending on your tiredness. It monitors your sleep using the iPhone's microphone and detects the optimal waking moments during which your body and brain is ready to wake up naturally and without extra stress. If you are tired and need a longer nap, you may get the full 30 minutes. If you are not so tired, HappyNap starts waking you after 15 minutes on optimal moments using gentle alarm signals.

Scientific experiments have shown that a short nap with a sleeping period between 15-30 minutes is very useful to increase your daytime alertness and productivity. This is noticed after a sleep deprivation (lack of sleep) and in normal condition (no lack of sleep during previous nights). This kind of short and effective nap is often referred to as a Power Nap.

The human sleep consists of different stages of sleep (see attached screenshot). Stage 1 is very light sleep, Stage 2 is light sleep, and Stages 3-4 & REM are deep sleep. Waking up during deep sleep is difficult. This difficulty is called "sleep-inertia": you feel groggy and even more tired and sleepy than before the nap. To avoid the sleep-inertia it is reasonable to wake up before the sleep is in stages 3-4 or REM sleep. Therefore, a nap with duration of less than 30 minutes is recommended.
