MONTANA is a card solitaire game that is simple to play but has interesting strategies.

The INITIAL CARD LAYOUT is created by dealing out four rows of 13 cards.
The aces are removed creating four blank spaces.

The GOAL of the game is to move the cards so that each row contains the 12 cards of
a suit in sequence from 2 to King.

MOVING CARDS: Cards can only be moved to blank spaces. A card can be moved to a
blank space if it next in sequence and of the same suit as the card just to the
left of the blank space. If the left-most place in a row is blank then there is
no previous card. In this case any 2 can be moved to the blank space.

GETTING STUCK: Often you will make all possible moves and the cards will still not
all be in sequence. Each of the four blank spaces will have a King, or another blank
space, on the left. When this happens you can redeal the cards.

REDEALING: In a redeal all the cards that are not in sequence are picked up, shuffled,
and put back on the board in the empty spaces created by picking up the cards.
When redealing the space to the right of the highest card in each sequence
is left blank.

SMALLER DECKS: Montana is traditionally played with a full deck with 13 cards
in each suit. This game allows smaller deck sizes which makes the game easier
and turns the game into a puzzle where the object is to sequence all the cards
without any redeals. This requires planning and looking ahead. Decks with four
or five cards in a suit can usually be won without a redeal.

STATISTICS: Montana allows two redeals. A variation called Addiction allows three
redeals. This game allows any number of redeals. The game keeps track of how many
redeals it took to win each game so you can look at those and determine which games
would have been won using the redeal limits of Montana or Addiction.

MONTANALYZER: This version of Montana allows a choice of 4, 5, 6, and 13 cards
in each suit. The $0.99 version of this game, Montanalyzer, allows any suit size
from 4 to 13. Montanalyzer also provide help in analyzing paths. It will follow
tentative paths for you and make all the plays if you like the path.
This is especially helpful with larger deck sizes that are too complex
for a complete analysis.
