Description:

The objective of the game is to slide tiles of letters around and form as many words, in English, as possible within the alloted time, three minutes.

Words can read from left to right, and top to bottom, not unlike crosswords. But significantly, words can also read right to left, and bottom to top. For this reason, as you play the game, you might find it helpful to rotate the device from portrait to landscape to upside down portrait to reverse landscape. Hence the 360.

A tile can only move into an empty space, and there is always only one empty space. As you move tiles around, leftwards, rightwards, upwards and downwards, the position of the empty space changes, thereby influencing which tiles you are able to subsequently move.

Whenever you form a word, the word will highlight, you will score, and the tiles of the word will be randomly replaced.

As a rule, one and two letter words don't score (because that would be too simple). Three, four, five, six and seven letter words do. A three letter word scores 3 points. A four letter word scores 2 times 4 points. A five letter word scores 3 times 5 points. A six letter word scores 4 times 6 points. And a seven letter word, the largest word that can be formed in the game, scores 5 times 7 points. So, the longer the word, the better.

As you play the game, you'll find that avoiding the formation of a short word is often as important as putting together a long word. The reason is simply that a short word might cause you to lose one or more tiles needed for a long word. Since all of the tiles are set randomly, every vowel should be put to good use. Of course, if you end up with only consonants, it will be difficult to form more words.

You can mark and unmark individual tiles, if you would like to keep track of certain tiles. A triple tap changes the colour of the letter to red. Another triple tap changes the colour back to white.

Each game goes for three minutes. The amount of time passed is represented by a blue bar. As the blue nears the edge, the game reaches its end.

The system maintains the top 10 scores on a server and on your device. To get the latest scores, you have to be connected to the Internet when you enter the top scores area. Whilst you can play the game entirely offline and have your best score recorded, to find out if your best score is amongst the all-time best, you have to connect to the server.

Because of the need to rotate the screen while you play, Words 360 is a game designed especially for the iphone and ipod touch.

But it is not just another game. Words 360 tests your vocabulary, your spelling, and even your logic and problem solving skills (ie, how to get a tile from one part of the screen to another).

If you're a fan of scrabble or crossword puzzles, you'll love Words 360.
