Description:This novel was written in 1881 by the Brazilian writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, who is widely regarded as the most influential and important person in Brazilian literature. American critic Harold Bloom considers Machado de Assis amongst the greatest 100 geniuses of literature. Born in poverty to a housepainter and washerwoman, Machado de Assis may have taught himself to write and then learnt French and English fluently, translating many of Shakespeare’s works into Portuguese.
Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas is narrated by the dead protagonist Bras Cubas, who tells his own life story from the grave. Cubas reveals the defects of Brazilian society in a satirical manner, and considers his life a success as he did not father any children to pass on the misery of life. This novel has a distinctive style of short, erratic chapters which shift in tone and style.
